Growing interest in freight carbon calculator
The award-winning Tyne and Wear Freight Partnership has introduced one of the UK’s first freight-based carbon calculators. Covering the whole of the UK, the Multi-Modal Carbon Calculator (known more simply as the MMCC) will work out the carbon produced for any given freight journey by either road, rail or sea, making it an invaluable resource for companies wishing to establish the carbon impact of choosing a particular mode for freight shipments.
For rail or sea movements, the calculator includes full addresses and contact details for 193 terminals around the country, providing a comprehensive database that will be of considerable benefit to anyone wishing to move goods by these modes or, hoping to begin the process of establishing the environmental feasibility of switching mode.
John Bourn of the Tyne and Wear LTP Team, who manages the Partnership, commented: "The Tyne and Wear Freight Partnership already has a European-wide reputation for innovative measures to promote sustainable freight movement. The Multi-Modal Carbon Calculator is a powerful tool that we have developed and our aim now is to inform the wider freight community of its availability and encourage them to register for it."
Already nearly 100 visitors have used the calculator to find out the carbon footprint of a particular freight trip and this number is expected to rise as more freight stakeholders learn of the resource.
The calculator is accessible via the Freight Partnership’s website and has been developed with the support of the C-LIEGE project.
